Kevin Owen is the President of Owen Architecture, an architectural firm created in Winston-Salem over 18 years ago. He received his Bachelor’s of Arts in Architecture at the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 1984 and became a Licensed Architect in North Carolina in 1992. Prior to opening his own firm he worked in several of North Carolina’s larger Architectural firms such as Gantt Huberman Architects in Charlotte and Walter, Robbs, Callahan & Pierce in Winston-Salem.
As the President of Owen Architecture, Kevin specializes in commercial architecture in and around western North Carolina, paying particular attention to rehabilitation, reuse, and repurposing of older buildings. Since the inception of the North Carolina Rehabilitation Code he has completed over 100 code reviews of older buildings for new uses, many of which have gone on to be completed and made viable commercial endeavors.
Working closely with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Inspections Department, Kevin developed a matrix method of approaching Rehabilitation Projects that quickly identifies issues and possible solutions in the rehabilitation process, creating a base for further discussion between both the Property Owners and the Inspections Department.
As part of The Change-of-Use Task Force, a Winston-Salem community group of Commercial Real Estate Agents along with key members of The Winston-Salem Inspection Department and Planning Department Staff, and a local Contractor, he, as the Architect member of the committee, streamlined and clarified the Change-of-Use process. This group successfully created several changes that were implemented by the City of Winston-Salem.
Toward the end of 2013, Kevin was appointed by the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners to serve a two – four year terms as the Architect Member of the Forsyth County Historic Properties Commission. He served as it’s chair for the last four years.
In the past he has served as president and board member of both the American Institute of Architecture in Winston-Salem and the Winston-Salem Little Theatre. Though not recently, he has been involved with a number of productions on the Theatre’s main stage. He currently sits on The Crisis Control Ministry of Winston-Salem Board of Directors.
Kevin lives in Winston-Salem with his wife.
